Album Info

Release Date: 1999

Label: Hatje Cantz

CD housed on front cover of the book 'James Turrell Eclipse' (ISBNs: 1-900829-08-8, UK; 3-7757-0898-7, Germany), published by Hatje Cantz Publishers, Germany & Michael Hue-Williams Fine Art, UK, who also commissioned the projects. Book was published to commemorate the event of the solar eclipse on 11 August 1999, for which James Turrell created a new Skyspace, The Elliptic Ecliptic, in Tremenheere, Cornwall. The Gazing Engine was composed by Paul Schütze in response to this Skyspace.
In the book, Schütze wrote 'The music I have written is not an accompanying soundtrack to the eclipse but an investigation in sound about the shifts in perception and memory, which characterise the shape of this natural phenomena and its containment, "The Elliptic Ecliptic", that James has built for it. Perhaps the music can be heard as a map for the senses'.
