The Ancient Greek Pantheon (world of the Gods) describes a proper example of anthropomorphic (human shaped) personification.
The Gods, like Hypnos or Thanathos, were phenomena like sleep or death, that the Greek would give a personality and a literal face.
To identify with these, and to tell stories about them, meant to explain them.
This is how personification and "humanising" these natural phenomena became a reflection and interpretation to find reason in something seaming so inexplicable and wondrous to the human mind.
