[On sleeve inside:]
There is, surprisingly, a remarkable ferocity in all this (this being ZTT’s wishful, bashful Element Series) – but can it be carried too far? Wishful Thinking – reactivated with intent – appears as part 23 in the Element Series. A product of Zang Tuum Tumb, the organisation of pop. Coming next? No more clues...
[In booklet:]
All tracks sourced from original master tapes except for '(the beta wraparound of) p:Machinery'. Zang Tuum Tumb was unable to retrieve the original master for this track. Instead, a new master has been created for this release, based on multiple vinyl transfers, which significantly improves on the quality of the vinyl transfer which appeared on WEA Japan’s 1994 CD edition of A Secret Wish.

[Notes extracted from liner notes:]
– 'Abuse' [is] based on the early, more rhythmic demos of 'Dr Mabuse'.
– The entire Wishful Thinking project had initially been set up with the US in mind. 'Sorry For Laughing' – the 'lost' Propaganda single (or one of them) – already had a spellbinding remix in the form of the Unapologetic 12" (see Element Eleven) but it was reworked again into the US Dance Mix and then retitled into what you hear here, 'Laughed'.
– Bonus tracks no. 1 [track 9 in the whole program] and no. 5 are derived from 'Mabuse'. 'Strength to Dream' started life as an edit for the 12" single (logged as 'Mabuse Theme with Orch' on 4 February 1984) before becoming the coda to the A Secret Wish album. And bonus track no. 5 [4] almost became the final album version – it's derived from the same 26 April 1985 session that spawned the Goodnight mixes of 'The Chase' and 'p:Machinery' that appeared on Element Eleven.
– 'Machined', after 'p:Machinery', is the linchpin of the whole set and the reimagining of this track led to a brace of releases to tie in with Propaganda's Outside World tour: 'p:Machinery Reactivated' – with the aforementioned Magazine guitar [John McGeogh of Magazine] – on 7", 12" and (had everything gone exactly to plan) singlette, and a revised, CD-only edition of A Secret Wish. The full 12" version is included here as bonus track no. 3 [2, track 10], alongside a previously-unheard instrumental take of the 7" reactivation. The B-side of 'p:Machinery Reactivated' was 'Frozen Faces' and an early instrumental jam around this track, from 11 December 1984, appears as bonus track no. 2 [5, track 13].
– For a set that opened and closed with 'Dr Mabuse', Wishful Thinking always felt like it had a bonus track: 'Thought', an instrumental remake of one of the first Propaganda recordings, 'Disziplin'.
