Flamenquistas - Vol. 1 & 2 by Ramón Montoya, Niño Ricardo, Various

Artists

Album Info

Label: Stinson Records

Remastering of Stinson's two "Flamenquistas" originally released as 78s, so don't expect an audiophile experience. Vol. 1 features "Spain's Greatest Flamenco Singers, Dancers, And Guitarists in Actual Performance," Vol. 2 is the music of Montoya and Ricardo. The liner notes omit track 9 entirely and don't credit any of the performers on tracks 9, 10 or 18 despite describing the music in detail. Some track titles and names of several artists are also badly mis-spelled (they are listed correctly above). No duration times for any tracks are provided in the notes or on the disc, and nowhere on the disc or in the package can you discover in what year this CD was made. The good news is that the music is excellent, and provides listeners the opportunity to experience various styles of Flamenco from many of the earliest recorded masters of the genre, for while Montoya was widely recorded many of these other tracks are unavailable elsewhere.
Total run time 52:23
'Body percussion' for Alejandro Vega on track 2 was the best match for a Flamenco dancer found in Discogs descriptors.
After three decades of negotiations, Stinson's catalog was acquired by Smithsonian Folkways in June, 2019.
