In 2001, Renz Verano released his fifth studio album Lorena in Philippines. Renz Verano has released a number of top-selling albums. Lorena is dominated by passionate, easy listening love songs. The songs are also very dramatic, and Verano puts much feeling into them. Ten of the album's 11 songs are slow, and only one, "Sulat" (Letter), has a modicum of spirit. As can be expected, the predominance of slow songs gets monotonous. The five slow songs that comprise side one of the cassette are passable. Ikaw Ang Pag-asa (You're the Hope), for example, is a pretty, touching ballad, and is a remake of "You Took My Heart Away," first done by European band Michael Learns to Rock. This version uses new lyrics in Tagalog, the Philippines' national language. Renz Verano has a strong voice, featuring much depth and passion. However, he rarely strays from the easy listening ballad on his albums, and one wishes he would challenge himself more. Side two of the cassette is monotonous, as the songs tend to sound like the songs on side one, and there isn't much difference. However, one very nice song on side two is the remake of Patsy Cline's big hit, the winsome "Crazy." This version uses new lyrics in Tagalog. "Sulat," on side two, is the album's only song not slow and dramatic, and has some spirit and a nice chorus. Many other songs on the album are redundant.
