From the liner notes: Words and Music is a duo, not a reader with accompanist. It is a fiery blend of the seasoned writing, performing and musical talents of Jesse Bernstein and Pete Leinonen. Bernstein's writing is radical and desparate. He intones his words variously like a country preacher, or bored housewife. Pete Leinonen's composed and improvised music is a brilliant melding of jazz, classical, and international traditions. His lines explode around the words, vanish, reappear and take off on wild solo flights. Words and Music delivers an original and potent performance. Steven J. Bernstein, March 25, 1984.
