About the Recording
The present recording was made for Columbia by the composer and an unusual ensemble, organized by trombonist Stuart Dempster [...]. The recording was built up in three layers. A first performance by the eleven-member ensemble was built around Margaret Hassell's Pulse; and two overdubs, with ten musicians in the first and seven in the second, were then synchronized to it with earphones. The maximum resulting instrumental strength on the finished record consists of 3 vibraphones, 3 saxophones, 3 trombones; 3 violas, 3 flutes, 2 bassoons; 3 oboes, 3 trumpets, 2 marimbaphones, 2 clarinets; and piano.
