Concert Tour of Great Britain - Summer 1981 by The Aeolian SIngersDartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Directed by Claire Wall
The Aeolian Singers, a choir of some forty women’s voices, from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, was founded in September 1976 by its director, Claire Wall, as part of the Continuing Education Program sponsored by the Dartmouth Board of School Commissioners. The accompanist is June Rigden, a member of the choir.
For three consecutive years, the SINGERS have been awarded the Rose Bowl by the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival in recognition of having received the highest marks in the adult choral classes. In his adjudication of the choir, Gerald Wheeler described their performances as “singing of a very high order, very polished with moments of exquisite beauty ... very aesthetic and musical work.” Recognition and encouragement have also been received from the Canada Council of the Arts every year since the choirs inception, in the form of financial support.
The AEOLIAN SINGERS have sung in numerous communities in Eastern Canada, in addition to frequent performances in the Halifax-Dartmouth area, and on C.B.C. Radio and television. THis tour of England, Scotland and Wales, a first for the choir, was undertaken with enthusiasm; those unable to make the trip, stayed behind with regret.
The choir takes its name from the Aeolian harp, a stringed instrument, played by the wind, productions the effect of a choir of music in the air, sweetly mingling all the harmonic notes.
During this tour, the Aeolian Singers presented concerts a - Commonwealth Institute, London, England, Christ Church, Chelsea, London, England; Canada House, London England; Dumfries Academy, Dumfries, Scotland; Thornton Hough Parish Church, Thornton Hough, Cheshire, England; Presteigne Parish Church, Presteigne, Wales; and Guildhall, Dartmouth, Devon, England.
