The Enthusiasts' debut LP stems from the legacy of the Pacific Northwestern tradition of Love Rock that evolved from the timeline of K Records music from Olympia, Washington and continues to ring out through the Puget Sound in the small island town of Anacortes. Recorded in the church halls of the Unknown by Nich Wilbur, the brother and sister duo of Andrew Velin and Sommer Velin Carter harmonize majestically alongside their full folk-rock-alternative band composed of Mariah Barrett on Keys, Andy Brown on Drums, Rob Carter on Mandolin, Doug Cassidy on bass.
The songs resonate on the topics of home and taking in what surrounds us. Endearing messages that "Life's a Mess, That's the Main thing: It's a Winding Road." Vibrant with feeling, the melodies of the Enthusiasts radiate a joy and vigor that is purely enjoyable to hear in a time that has had fewer bands. Not to compare to bands of the past, but influences could point to groups like 4 Non Blondes, R.E.M., The Band, Jefferson Airplane and perhaps fellow, local family band- The Crabs.
The album leaves you with the dreamy track of "Heaven" and the hope for the good that isn't too far away. As a takeaway, "Too Long In This State" is a highlight jam while "Corner Song", featuring Jade Carter, is thoughtful and sincere with its rhythmic waltz wanderings.
