Hatherleigh is a small picturesque, ‘market town in mid-Devon, with a population of approximately one thousand. This ancient town, with its lovely thatched houses even in the main street, has boasted a band certainly since 1867, when the Methodist Temperance band was formed. At one period there were three bands in the town!
Jim Nairn, who has been musical director since 1973, started his career in music at the age of nine with the New Cumnock Silver Band. He has played with many of the well-known Midlands and Yorkshire Bands, and the former Scottish Champions, the Dallmellington Band.
Hatherleigh started contesting in 1975, became the Champion Devon Youth Band in 1976 and,in 1977, was promoted into the 3rd section of the South West Brass Band Association, going on to win nine trophies. In 1978, the band were runners up in their new section. Members are drawn from the immediate area and consists largely of junior players; the youngest playing on the recording being only eight years old._ All money to support the band is raised by voluntary work, sufficient money over the past four years being raised to enable the band to spend around £7,000 purchasing a new set of instruments and new uniforms.
