‘Fallen From The Tree’ was recorded primarily in my studio apartment at 415 Park Avenue in Waukesha, WI. in 1999. The only recording equipment I had was an Aiwa 3 CD / dual cassette shelf stereo that had a karaoke function on it and an aux input on the back. I basically recorded the bass, keys and percussion parts on cassette tape, ping-ponging them back and forth (and losing fidelity on every pass), and then karaoking over my own instrumentals for the vocals. For multiple vocal tracks I’d once again have to bounce from tape to tape, and so most of the original recordings on the album were laden with tape hiss by the time they were completed. Few of those original cuts appear on this, however - though during the heyday of The Hideous North, I marketed my albums aggressively on the internet, and so those original takes are still out there if you’re curious about them (but trust me, the re-records collected here are far better versions).
The Hideous North... I didn’t come up with the name on my own, I have to admit. I was a big fan of the British pop group The Beautiful South, and a friend of mine, after listening to a few demos of my work, commented: “You should call yourself The Hideous North - these songs are terrible!”
Nonetheless, these compositions mark the actual debut output of The Hideous North as I would want it to be remembered. Though some (most?) of the songs were re-recorded in later years, and other tracks have been entirely omitted (sorry - I’d just rather let those be forgotten!) this tracklist is still a very proper re-issue of the ‘Fallen From The Tree’ album, but re-introduced in a way that both fan and artist can appreciate.
