Notorious B.I.G.'s debut album, Ready To Die, brought the game back to the East Coast after West Coast-dominated sounds had ruled the radio in the early '90s. The M.C., a.k.a. Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. Biggie Smalls, had placed a greater emphasis on the lyrical ability that others had forgotten about in Rakim's absence. At the same time, he retained a sound which seamlessly blended the G-Funk of the West Coast with the cinematic low-end coming from his peers in Brooklyn and Shaolin. Releasing only two albums before his untimely death in 1997, Biggie nevertheless established himself as one of, if not THE, greatest rapper of all time. The Dub Hop Tribute to Notorious B.I.G. is an experiment in fusion and sound. It's about taking the smooth low-ends that framed the best of Biggie's work, and blending them with the rocksteady rhythms that are at the heart of true dub music. This album is also daring enough to add to the mix stretches of the best that true blues and Americana have to offer. Like much of Biggie's work, it is a gift and an offering; an offering of the best of both worlds.
