The Residents recorded Freak Show in 1991, following a demanding world tour of their theatrical production, CUBE-E: The History of American Music in 3 E-Z Pieces. The album was conceived to present a series of musical short stories about several imaginary circus freaks. The musical album received great critical acclaim but the stories begged to be told through a visual medium. Dark Horse Publishing invisioned a graphic novel, which was published in 1992. But The Residents had always been interested in developing new media for artistic expression. So they approached The Voyager Company in early 1992 with a proposal for an interactive CD-ROM that would expand upon the existing music and graphic works.
Voyager released the CD-ROM version of Freak Show in January 1994. This remastered and reedited version of the album is thus the original soundtrack to the CD-ROM, possibly the first CD-ROM soundtrack ever released.
