At the beginning of the Circle Line Project 14 Berlin was the fascination for the Berlin S-Bahn, especially the Ringbahn. Almost 1 million passengers are transported through and around Berlin every day. The diversity of passengers, the different sounds of the individual stations, the many street musicians, the homeless, those asking for help have always touched me.
Originally, the project was planned as a concert. For this, I circled around Berlin several times on the S-Bahn (S41) and made recordings throughout, which were then played back during the concert. Like musicians in a moving S-Bahn, we played during the journey. At the start and stop, we changed from carriage to carriage. In this way, 27 compositions were created, interrupted only by the imaginary stop of the S-Bahn.
The sound of the S-Bahn, the babble of the passengers, their conversations, the urban sound are unique: a sound imprint of a city. Having travelled around it many times, I am still fascinated by how multi-layered it is, at the same time unmistakable. It is an essential part of BERLIN's life. It's nice to hear this sound and to know that you are part of it.
