"In the Shadow of the Sun
the soundtrack of the Derek Jarman film, performed by
Throbbing Gristle"

Dedicated to Derek Jarman.

In The Shadow Of The Sun GB 1972-74 Colour 54 min
A film by Derek Jarman
Original music by Throbbing Gristle 1980
Produced by James Mackay for Dark Pictures
Made possible with financial assistance from Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek, Berlin

"The music was improvised to a VHS video cassette of the finished film onto an 8 track tape deck at a cost of just over £100. This film was made entirely on Super 8mm film during 1972-74 at a cost of approximately £100. The completed film with soundtrack was first screened at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1981. Throbbing Gristle were Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter Christopherson and Genesis P-Orridge. The result of this unique collaboration was always intended as a first move towards a genre of Ambient videos, watchable many times, in much the same way as Ambient music is used to enhance or complete an environment. It has no linear, entertainment or musical intent outside that function. This CD shows a side of TG previously not demonstrated in other releases and is therefore a valuable addition to any collection."
