Tommy Gray is a "Romany", born in Scotland on the 22nd of April 1950, the eldest son in a family of five. His life has been spent travelling the length and breadth of the country, mostly with fairgrounds, whilst his mother maintained the traditional gypsy role of a clairvoyant. Although from an early age he had the popular music of two decades drummed into him from fairground machines, it wasn't until retiring from an illustrious boxing career of 9 years amateur and 3 years professional, against world class opposition, that he began to take his music seriously. Says Tommy, "The first song I ever wrote was 'Gypsy Boy'. I'm very proud of that song because it tells simply the way this Gypsy Boy sees life. I am continuously developing as a writer, with some great musicians around me, so I'm learning fast, and I love it!"-John Cousins.
