Odds & Demos - From 1978 To 1983 by U2

Artists

Album Info

Release Date: 1985

Label: Lifeline LTD.

A1 to A4 - Are part of the demo tape "False Prophet Demos", recorded by U2 between 1978 and 1979 and never released afterwards.
A6 - Recorded at the "Studio Rockton K.R.O.", Hilvestrum, Holland on Oct. 14th, 1980.
A7, A8 - Are taken from the BBC TV show "Old Grey Whistle Test", which features new artists at their debut on television; this was recorded on Feb. 28th, 1981. "The Ocean" is a track of the "Boy" LP, "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" is the first single released in UK on Isaland Records. They both came out in 1980.
B2 - Was originally released on U2 second album "October" and never played in public. This performance is taken from the BBC Radio 1 "Kid Jensen Sessions", aired on Oct. 14th, 1981.
B3 - As well from "October" is taken from a gig at the Hammersmith Palais, London, recorded on Mar. 29th, 1983 during the first leg of the British "Wat Tour Spring '83". This particular version is intriguing because U2 didn't play this song more than four or five times live and this one shows U2 in trouble with the song and the ability to recapture the audience attention.
B4 - This is taken from the BBC Radio 1 "John Peel Sessions", broadcasted on Feb. 1983. This track, included on the 3rd LP War, was never played on stage and this is a unique live performance for this session.
B5 - This version is as rare as good. It's taken from the U2 set during the "Phoenix Park Festival" in their hometown Dublin, Ireland, for the Hot Press Fifth Birthday on Aug. 14th, 1983. It features a gorgeous fiddle solo and the usual Bono minicover, this time of the Who song "Baba O'Riley" (1971).
B6 - This popular Bob Dylan's hymn is taken from the concert at the Hammersmith Palais on Mar. 29th, 1983. This cover version features two great artists, who were unknownto most of the audience: Mike Peters, Singer / Songwriter / Guitarist of The Alarm, who sings the second verse and backs up Bono, and Stewart Adamson, Singer / Songwriter / Guitarist of Big Country, who sings the third verse and backs up Bono and Mike Peters in chroruses.

Back Cover's note: "This record is dedicated to all U2 fans all over this rockin' world and the band itself. This record is a part of a major plan including a secon volune with more recent rarities and odd tapes. The precious tapes were mostly suppled by "Lifeline Ltd." and by the "Taping Brothers" catalogue, who also gave the picture for the front cover (U2 in 1983).
The back sleeve notes, titles, concept were conceived by "Lifeline Ltd.".
This record was engineered at the "Taping Brothers" dubbing studio and mastered on Mar. 28th. 1985 in two hours on the moon, by the third crater on the left ...
Thank U too and play this record louder than your troubles; goddnight ...".
