Finished December 2002, released by Firebox on 28 february 2003.The first idea was to create a mini-CD, with one new track (Missing), a re-recorded version of 'Absence Of Life' and a long version of Chopin's 'March Funèbre'. Three tracks and about 57 minutes long. At the time i was planning to release 'Prelude To Monolith' (oktober 2002), the Finnish label Firebox showed interest in UDOM's music and i decided to wait with the release until i heard what Firebox had to say. Firebox offered me a one-album deal, and that was a good reason to make a full album in stead of a mini-CD. The tracks 'Missing' and 'Absence Of Life' remained and the long version (21+ minutes) of the cover became twice as short, so i had enough room left to put in another track and a short intro. The new track is called 'Slip Away' and, to me, is amongst the best tracks i've written so far. At the time the tracks intended to appear on the mini were recorded, i also continued working on 'Symphony III - Monolith'. Both 'Missing' and 'Slip Away' were written for Symphony III, which would become a double CD, now, the 'Monolith' concept will be divided over two releases : 'Prelude To Monolith' and 'Symphony III - Monolith', whether Symphony III will become a double CD or not is not yet sure...
Musical wise, 'Prelude To Monolith' differs from both the more brutal and symphonic approach on 'Symphony I - Deep Dark Red' and the absolute emptiness and heavy darkness on 'Symphony II - Absence Of Life'. 'Prelude To Monolith' is the last ray of light before the monolithic eternal darkness that is soon to come. From the epic feel of solitude and the wish to leave in 'Missing' to the last ray of cold, sick light to hurt my eyes in 'Slip Away', 'Prelude To Monolith' guides you to the last thing you'll ever see...a vague figure of a monolith, rising above the fog, the ashes and dust of a dead world...the last concious being in a twisted universe, the epitome of desolation, mis-understanding and pain...a hideous, defunct creation, whispering over and over again : ...soon...will...be...gone...
Recorded and mixed at Templa Libitina during April and December 2002, all music and lyrics written by S, between june 2001 and november 2002, except 'March Funèbre' : written by Frederic Chopin. Mastered at CCR studio, Zulte, Belgium.
