The Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center formally came into being on February 20, 1959 succeeding the original Experimental Music Studio at Columbia University. The establishment of the center was made possible by the grant of 175,000 USD from the Rockefeller Foundation in response to a proposal by Columbia and Princeton Universities to create complete studio facilities for the production of electronic music.
