1964 - The Year's Great Hits by Various

Artists

Album Info

Release Date: 1965-03

Label: Young World

The [first half of the] year's big hits, performed by - a bunch of anonymous artists/fake groups. While careful to attribute songwriting credits and list publishers, the compilers conspicuously make no attempt to indicate which artist performs which song. It is probably the same artists throughout, arguably making this an album, rather than a compilation...

Sightly different track listing to the NZ and UK "Group 64" version, with 14 tracks instead of 12. This one adds "Do-Wah-Diddy-Diddy", "Can't Buy Me Love", "You're My World" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart", and drops "The House Of The Rising Sun" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Different liner notes, with no production/technical credits given.

Australian WRC pressing, sourced from original stampers and featuring unique sleeve art. Mono and stereo versions have an identical sleeve and the same number on the back (YW/1510) - the mono version has "YW-1510" on pink Young World labels, while the stereo has "SYW-1510". The stereo was issued with a small "S" sticker on the front of the sleeve. Advertised for immediate release in March 1965 (out of sequence from other Young World LPs - there seems to be an odd-number sequence, with even numbers later issued to fill in the gaps: but the label did not last long enough to fill this out). Offered again in the October 1965 Christmas push - look for a different (or absent) number for the Flinders Lane address.
