The compilation based on a horror novella "Viy" (Вий) by the Ukrainian - Russian (Ukrainian-born) writer Nikolai Gogol.
In Slavic legends, Viy is a character from the underworld, whose gaze kills. His eyes are usually covered with huge eyelids and eyelashes, which he cannot lift without assistance.
