Pittsburgh's Greatest Hits by Various

Album Info

Label: Itzy Records

From the inner gatefold:
"This album is dedicated to all the swingin' disc jockeys who have made Pittsburgh the greatest oldies town in the country. A special thanks is extended to Clark race of KDKA, Porky Chedwick of WAMO, Mad Mike of WZUM, Bob Livorio of WKPA, and Terry Lee of WMCK for making the tunes in this album the monsters that they are. An additional thanks too, to the guys who run the hops in the Pittsburgh area because they have also helped. the jocks on the air and at the hops have created what is referred to as "The Pittsburgh Sound". It is unique because only the wildest of the fast records and the bluesy ballads become the oldie hits. Another strange thing is the fact that the value of these oldies is not determined by the quality of the records but by their hardness to get. Where else could a record like "Swingin' Little Chicky" sell for the ridiculous price of $75.00 and "Such A Good Night For Dreaming" be worth anywhere from $20.00 to $40.00. "69" is a strictly local record that has sold over 20,000 copies in the year or so that it's been out. "Experts" consider the sucess of records like these extremely hard to believe, but they are successful and are the reason that Pittsburgh's sound is really different. When songs that have "the oldie sound" are played on the pop stations here, they always become big pop hits. two good examples of this are "Let's Be Lovers" and "Please Be My Love Tonight". They were both very big pop hits about three years ago. Another strong point for Pittsburgh and it's oldies is the fact that an oldie doesn't die like a pop tune does. An oldie can sell for as long as ten years while most pop hits are off the charts in twelve short weeks. "Island Of Love" and "I Wanna Do It" have been steady sellers in this area for over five years and will continue to sell indefinitely as long as each kid listens to his older brother's records. This is why the kids here won't ever grow out of "the Pittsburgh sound".
