Lithuania has always been known as the land of song. So it's not surprising that the first Lithuanian song festival, held in Kaunas in 1924, with its three thousand participants and an audience of ten thousand developed into an impressive demonstration by singers, dancers and instrumental musicians.
The tradition of Lithuanian song festivals survived even during tragic periods of Lithuania's history, rousing the national consciousness of the people, eventually spilling over into the liberating scenes of the past decade, when tens of thousands participated in what came to be known as "The Singing Revolution".
In 2003 UNESCO proclaimed the tradition od Song and Dance Celebrations in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to be Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Singers, dancers and instrumentalists from every corner of Lithuania descent upon the capital in midsummer every four years. Even Lithuanians from overseas come to participate.
The ethnic heritage of the nation's past unfolds on Folklore day, which takes place on the first day of the festival. It's quite remarkable that people still chatter in their regional dialects, wear traditional apparel, and haven't forgotten the age old crafts of throwing pots, weaving sashes, brewing ale and pressing cheese.
The Hill park amphitheatre is the scenic backdrop for the Evening of ensembles - a colorful display of stylized folk music, song and dance, based on holiday, work and family traditions of the country. There's an unmistakable folk spirit that encompasses works of different times by Lithuanian composers and choreographers.
The innovative choreography that can be seen during the festival's Dance event brings to mind symbols of mythology and ritual. When nine thousand dancers weave their intricate patterns on the stadium field, the magic is enchanting.
The climax is Song day under the band shell at Vingis park. The voices of fifteen thousand men, women and children become the voice of the nation.
Thirty thousand performers and ten times that many audience members come to these cultural celebrations for a time of unprecedented kinship.
The festivities unite all generations through song and dance, symbolizing the nation's vitality and unity.
The Millenium Song Celebration of Lithuania AMŽIŲ SUTARTINĖ (Song of the Centuries) invites all again on 1-6 July of 2009.
