An Lanntair Arts Centre was opened in Stornoway in 1985. To celebrate its 10th Anniversary, in association with the National Gaelic Arts Project, we have created a major thematic project on a compelling aspect of our cultural and historical legacy. It has involved artists and musicians of national and international repute.

The standing Stones of Calanais (Challanish) on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis are among the World's great prehistoric monuments. Older than the pyramids, their inmmense age have made it impossible to do more than speculate on their origins and function. In modern times they have become a destination for travellers from around the globe.

Calanais will remain an enigma in perpetuity. This recording represents a consensus of highly personal responses to the mistery and is a valid and colse to definitive 'answer' as we can hope for, some 5.000 years after the megaliths were raised.
