"Thomas P.F. Hoving, Director of the Museum, asked the distinguished composer William Schuman to compose a special work to celebrate the Museum's 100th birthday. In accepting the commission Mr. Schuman suggested that there not be one special work but five different works to greet the opening of each exhibition. On behalf of the Museum, Mr. Schuman then asked four other prominent American composers to write fanfares for the Museum's Centennial. The composers were Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Walter Piston and Virgil Thomson."
