The Minangkabau of West Sumatra have one of the richest traditions of performing arts to be found in Indonesia. With only one or two singers and a single accompanying instrument (flute or bowed lute), this is highly intimate chamber music. These recordings, made in West Sumatra in 1992, focus on three distinct genres: saluang (flute and voice), rabab Pariaman (voice and lute), and dendang Pauah (excerpts from a long performance for flute and voice).
Produced in collaboration with the Indonesian Society for the Performing Arts (MSPI).
