This is the official original cast soundtrack album for the Filmation Associates animated feature-length motion picture "Journey Back To Oz" that premiered December 1972 in London theaters and June 1974 in the United States. It was only distributed as a detergent manufacturer (Texize/Morton Norwich) promotional premium tied to the film's reincarnation as a television special in 1980.

An unofficial soundtrack release had appeared in 1978 (Jimmy Van Heusen, Walter Scharf - The Motion Picture Sound Track Of The Return To Oz) and included material that does not appear on this album.

Most of the vocals and voice-acting was recorded in 1962 and those sessions were Liza Minnelli's first professional recording job. The earliest vinyl release of music from "Journey Back To Oz" is a Liza Minnelli record that was given out at American test screenings of the movie in 1974.
