This is the final tape from Con/Conventional Tapes. It is numbered Con 19 and brings the total number of tapes released by Conventional to 24. The total sales to date are 730 (approx).

I suggested some time ago that all was not well on the tape scene (see "Stick it in your Ear" and "Cabarte" fanzines) and decided to stop. Someone then wrote back saying that I should face up to the problems of tape making, see what they are and then try to overcome them. This seems fair enough but it actually underlies everything that is wrong with the tape scene. The people at Con are not planning to give up making music. We were never "tape artists"(!) we were people making music who found that at a particular time the tape had a lot to offer us. Now we are trying to broaden our horizons a little. To mess about with the limited scope of the tape release would in no way solve anything for us. The person who criticized me changed his musical style as a solution to the problem he faced but I think we were talking about a wider range of problems when we decided to stop. The tape scene is just that - a scene. It has become cosy to the point that its problems have generally not been those of making music but of making tapes - the largest expection probably being the people who only make tapes and whose problems are of a musical nature and of a presentational manner are closely linked. Perhaps I haven't explained my case very well but the outcome is that our solution to the problems we found in the independant tape scene is to stop trying to make what we do suitable for a tape but to do what we want to do and then find the best means of presenting it. This will involve tapes, records, gigs, mags and everything else we may find suitable. So the "End Of An Error" is not really an accurate title. The error would be to continue. Of course, the same need not apply to you.
