Two disc album "The Traditional songs from Pinega district" is the first publication of sound recordings of this local folklore.
Pinega songs tradition is an integral part of the folk musical culture of the Russian North. It is distinguished by well-preserved repertoire and rich development of choir polyphony.
Included in album are lyrical and round-dance songs (#1 - 17) are strictly connected with spring-summer peasant fests (so-called mechishche).The fragment of the rite going after reaping the harvest is also presented in this edition (#18). The record programme is concluded by three songs which were performed while parting with recruits.
The present album is based on the material of folklore trips of 1983-85 made by research workers of the Phonogrammarchive of the Institute of Russian Literature (The Academy of Science of the USSR).
