Liner notes:
"In 1953 and 1954 the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation organised two expeditions to Lapland in order to record samples of the Lapp vocal tradition - their yoiks - for posterity. This was part of the Corporation's continuing search for living folk music traditions in Sweden.
The result of these two expeditions exceeded all expectations. They were presented in a number of radio programmes and attracted interest far beyond the limited circle of folk music specialists.
Now this material has been published as a series of recordings with an accompanying text book.
The seven long-playing records contain everything that was recorded during the two expeditions. The material is arranged geographically from south to north, beginning in Frostviken and ending in Karesuando.
The text book contains chapters by the three experts who made the recordings: Israel Ruong, Matts Arnberg and Håkan Unsgaard. An invaluable contribution is Mr. Ruong's translation of the original yoik texts from the Lapp language to Swedish. These translations reveal a previously unknown body of literature containing pastoral lyrics, descriptions of individuals and tales of Lapp life.
Everything has been translated into English - including the yoik texts."
