From the liner notes: "I wanted to make Sparrow to capture the nostalgic mood of the old Hong Kong. This island was a unique city where the culture of the East and the West came together. Through the eyes of the pickpockets, we see a city that is vibrant, warm and beautiful. Musically I wanted a retro sound that would remind people of the way Hong Kong was. I specifically asked for the 'exotic oriental' sound that was popular in Western movie soundtracks in the fifties to accompany Asian settings or characters. My collaboration with Xavier Jamaux in Mad Detective was a fruitful one. His work with Fred Avril in Sparrow captures the feeling I wanted, and also brought out the musical playfulness that was so crucial to my image.' - Johnnie To.
