Pig City Records
“Fuck it, let’s do it anyway.”
That’s the spirit that’s embodied music in Brisbane since the beginning, and that’s the ethos that informs us at Pig City Records. Don’t talk to us about lockout laws and venue closures. We don’t want to know; we’ve heard it before. Bands in Brisbane have had to deal with this shit forever. No one would release the Saints’ first single, so they created their own label and did it themselves. There were no venues for them to play either, so they hired out halls. Until the cops came and shut them down.
In the early 1980s, the Parameters, whose song gave a name to a book and now this record label, described the local atmosphere: “Go to a dance to have some fun / Here come the boys with their dogs and guns / They don’t like punks, run Johnny run!” The point is somehow great music keeps getting made here. That’s why this label exists – to release music on vinyl and digital platforms by Brisbane artists who get on with it and get the job done.
Pig City Records is the brainchild of Andrew Stafford (journalist and author of Pig City, a social/political/musical history of Brisbane) and Sean Clift (Red Dust Management and drummer with the mighty Lords of Wong). Your music doesn’t have to be any specific genre. The only criteria is you're from Brisbane, your music fits the fuck-it ethos and that we love you.
