49th State Hawaii Record Co.

Record label and Recording Studio, Honolulu, Hawaii.

In 1946 George K. Ching, proprietor of Honolulu's "Maestro Record Store," recognized that there was an interest in Hawaiian music and expanded his business to fill that need. He added recording services that grew into a recording studio and record label. Local talent was used, such as John Kameaaloha Almeida, Gabby Pahinui and Genoa Keawe, to name a few.

The original label shows a map of the Hawaiian islands in purple on a red background with black writing. After cat. nr. 149, the writing changed to a whitish silver. In the early 1950s, a new label was introduced, featuring a hula dancer. The latest label, used only on 45rpm releases, was yellow and featured a red hibiscus (the territorial flower) with a golden state star, a white lei and a hula dancer.
