The company was originally created in 1958 by Lester Sill and Lee Hazlewood in the context of their songwriting and producing partnership. The name of the company comes from the first name of Sill's (Greg) and Hazlewood's sons (Mark, b. 1955).
The label released music during 1961-62, but the partnership broke up when Lester Sill went off to form Philles Records with Phil Spector.
