BONG was started as a mailing list for fans of Depeche Mode.
Rob Augino came up with the idea of letting the members of the mailing list send in their interpretations of Depeche Mode songs, and then release them as tribute-compilations to the public, free of charge and without any commercial interest.
The series began in 1995 and new editions are produced every few years still! Along the way more and more established groups and artists have joined to contribute to the series.
