The label was founded in August 1949 by David and Jules Braun, together with Fred Mendelsohn. It had considerable success. In 1950 Regal started distributing records of Royal Roost, a New York jazz label. Later that year, it obtained masters of the Detroit-based Sensation (2) label.

In November 1951 the owners announced that Regal Records would be shut down. Many of Regal's artists moved to Okeh. King Records, which was owned by Syd Nathan, obtained many of Regal Record's masters.
The Brauns returned to DeLuxe Records, a label that they had founded but that was now owned by Nathan.
