Gatemouth

Founded in 1979 by David Feinman

David Feinman's introduction to Gatemouth:

WHY IS THIS ALLIGATOR SMILING?

GATEMOUTH is a greeting or salutation, usually from one musician to another. Correct usage, as in "Say, Gatemouth" (abbr. "Say, Gate"), implies respect for the prowess of the newly greeted swing musician. "I just met the swellest Gatemouth!" would certainly be a faux pas, which is the same as putting your foot in your you-know-what.
When young Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines were hanging out in Chicago, Earl nicknamed Louis "Satchelmouth" and Louis called Earl "Gatemouth". I suppose this was an abbreviation of "Alligatormouth" although, after an exam- ination of the chops of either Earl or Louis, a reasonable case could be made for Gate as a reference to the Pearly Gates of Heaven.
GATEMOUTH is also the title of a tune that was recorded by Johnny Dodds and Kid Ory. And now GATEMOUTH is the name of a little jazz record company.
As you can see, "Meester Gatemouth" is an alligator with a past.
