The label was established in the spring of 1952 by Charles Mingus and his then-wife Celia. Soon, Max Roach became the third partner. Debut was among the early independent labels where the musicians themselves were in charge. At about 1957 releases came to a halt, and in 1962 Mingus allowed a reissue series of the Debut material by the Fantasy label run by Max and Sol Weiss.
Not to be confused with the independent Danish label Debut Records (3).
