The company was founded in 1983 by Ruth Schwartz (one of the original co-editors of Maximumrocknroll). Mordam was the exclusive distributor for dozens of punk rock and independent record labels (e.g. Alternative Tentacles, Asian Man Records, Lookout! Records, Sympathy For The Record Industry and many more) throughout the 1980s and 90s. They also released records on their own in-house record label in the mid-to-late 80s.
In 2005 the label was sold to / merged with Lumberjack Distribution to form Lumberjack Mordam Music Group.
