Grand Opera Disc Record

A short-lived sublabel of Columbia Phonograph Co. used in 1903 to release records for famous opera singers at the time. Some of the few artists that recorded for this label were soprano Suzanne Adams (with her husband, cellist Leo Stern), soprano Marcella Sembrich, contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heink, baritones Antonio Scotti, Giuseppe Campanari, and Charles Gilibert (with his wife, mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Lejeune-Gilibert), and basso Edouard De Reszke, which were the only recordings he made. These recordings also had bandleader Charles A. Prince playing piano accompaniment, early on in his career with Columbia. However, Grand Opera Disc Record was quickly overshadowed by Victor Red Seal and ultimately abandoned by the end of the year as they sold rather poorly due to their high price and inferior sound quality, and as a result of many of the aforementioned artists leaving Columbia to record with Victor Records.
