Grand Records

US label formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1953 and located on Lancaster Avenue. It was founded by Herb Slotkin and recorded a number of R & B vocal groups and a few solo acts and gospel artists. It is today mostly remembered for the recordings by The Castelles who embodied the "Philly Sound" in the early nineteen fifties. In June of 1955, Stan Pat a Philadelphia area radio personality (broadcasting from Trenton, New Jersey) became head of A & R for the label. He was also manager for Screamin Jay Hawkins who made some early sides for the Grand label. Also having some early success on the label were Philadelphia stalwarts Lee Andrews & The Hearts, and The Silhouettes.

45 RPM Catalog Number, Date and Label Identification:
All Grand first pressings are on thick discs with small lettering on the artist and title lines. Reissues had this print nearly double the size of that used on originals. Pressings with the label's address shown are reissues. First pressings had the selection number on the bottom whereas later issues had the number on the left side We can't swear to this being true on every Grand 45; however, it applies to all that we have seen.

For unofficial releases, see Grand Records (8).
