Gotham

Independent record label, active from 1946-1956.

Founded in 1946 by Sam Goody and Ivin Ballen in New York City (thus the name Gotham). In 1948, Ballen bought out Goody's share and moved the company to Philadelphia. In May 1950, the label introduced the 45 rpm format, but continued to press 78s as well.

In May 1950, Gotham acquired 300 masters from the Miltone Records label.

45 RPM Catalog Number, Date and Label Identification:
100 through 288 (1951–1953): Blue label.
289 through 304 (1953–1955): Red label.
305 and higher (1955 forward): Yellow label.
Gotham 304 was also issued on blue and on yellow labels. Red vinyl issues appear for many Gotham discs. Actual selection numbers may be shown with a "7" preceding the above numbers.
