Mutant
Mutant Records is/was an independent experimental music record label, founded in 1988, based in Ontario, Canada. Mutant Records is/was run by Jeremy Morrow, also known for his attachment to the musical groups Focus 23 and Sounds. Often, the label was known to release extremely limited editions, so low that obtaining them was essentially unrealistic. This was generally seen as a joke about labels that made things so rare that people could not enjoy what the label produced.
Although the label roster dwindled in its final years to releasing nothing but Focus 23 material, it originally ran through a series of groups, mostly in the late 80's to early 90's. The style of music varies, dabbling with punk (Instant Regurgitation, Large Dong, The Semen Heads), harsh industrial (Parasites, Whirl), folk (Gerber The Wonder Baby, Orgasmic Hiccup), experimental (Focus 23, Industrial Strength Noise, The Mutation Weekend, Penishead, Thank You For Not Smoking), lo-fi (Cancerhead, Gorf, Idiot Spaceman, Rodel Cast, Shit Ass Panic), ambient minimalism (Focus 23), techno (The Rejects), and more.
Although Jeremy Morrow stopped releasing material on Mutant around 2003, he did continue to create three additional projects as Focus 23. He also continued to work with a group called Sounds, releasing work on the Canadian label, Soft (sometimes referred to as Soft Imprint).
In addition to music, Mutant Records also released a series of books by Scott Cunningham, Jeremy Morrow and Sean Wilson. They also hosted a number of live shows for their artists between 1989 and 1992.
Related record labels include Sir Edward Productions, Doomsday Transmissions, Xcreteria, and Soft.
