Stora Teatern

Swedish music and theatre building, popularly known as 'Storan', in the Lorensberg district of Gothenburg.

'Stora Teatern' is a historic building. The building was inaugurated in 1859 under the name 'Nya Theatern'. The name 'Stora Teatern' was added in 1880. The editor-in-chief of 'Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfarts Tidning', Sven Adolf Hedlund, was the driving force behind the theatre's creation.

The beautiful and richly decorated salon with its three balconies, ceiling paintings and large chandelier is preserved in its original condition, although the light today is electric instead of gas-powered. For most of the 20th century, until the construction of GöteborgsOperan, 'Stora Teatern' was Gothenburg's foremost opera and musical stage.

'Stora Teatern' with its 6350 square meter is now declared a listed building. During the 2000s, the interior of the building was renovated at a cost of up to SEK 60 million, and a number of concert, banquet and restaurant premises were also created.

Today, the artistic activities at 'Stora Teatern' are run under the auspices of the City of Gothenburg as part of the company 'Göteborgs Stadsteater Aktiebolag'. Together with Cirkus Cirkör, 'Stora Teatern' and Cirkus i Väst run a contemporary circus school to strengthen and develop contemporary circus in the region.
