J Records was a private joint venture between former Arista C.E.O. Clive Davis and BMG Entertainment.
It has been established after he was rehired by BMG Music (which had forced his retirement from Arista Records in 2000).
J Records was a part of the RCA Music Group, a unit of Sony Music Entertainment.
In September 2011, J Records, alongside Jive, Arista and LaFace Records were all absorbed by Sony with its flagship label, RCA, bringing all of its artists to the RCA family.
